Here are some questions frequently asked about belly dancing:
Am I too old/fat/skinny/whatever to belly dance?
Absolutely not! Belly dance is accepting of all body types and ages! You'll find several belly dancers with your body type or age in this very studio--teenagers to grandmothers, junior sized to plus sized!
What do I wear to classes?
Wear something comfortable that you can work out in. Belly dancing works a lot in isolating muscles, so it does help your instructor if you wear form fitting clothing. A tank top/tee shirt and yoga pants are fine. You do not need to have any kind of costuming, although something tied around your waste like a hip scarf or coin belt is helpful.
Do I have to show my belly?
No. There is only belly respect at Ancient Arts. You are encouraged to show your belly, and we will LOVE your belly (Yes! yours) but we are flexible with everyone's level of comfort! Even if you desire to perform someday and are uncomfortable with exposing your midruff, there are many costuming options that cover the belly.
Do I have to perform if I take a class?
No. We offer performance opportunities to all of our classes but it is not mandatory. Again, we like to work with your level of comfort! Some people like to take the class just to have fun and get some excersize! Some people like to take the class because of all the cool costumes you get to wear when you perform! Either is perfectly acceptable.
Are belly dancers strippers?
No. We do not remove clothing while dancing. Ancient Arts Dancers follow an etiquette to maintain a ladylike behavior at all times when performing. We consider ourselves family friendly entertainment!
